If we are not talking about design changes in the pattern or in its individual details, then you can increase the length of the dress, trousers, shorts or skirt quite simply.

At the stage of transferring the contours of the details of the pattern to the fabric, simply lower the bottom line by the required amount to get the product length you need, for example, to the knees or below the knees.

How to reduce or increase the pattern of Burda by 1-2 sizes

But if we are talking about the length of the product to the floor or about models with a low waist, then you need to do otherwise.

Define the waistline

Take the usual elastic tape and tie it on yourself in the narrowest part of the figure. This will be the waistline.

In the figure, the waistline is highlighted in red.

Determine the length of the product

Using a centimeter tape from the waistline, measure the length to the floor and write down the resulting value.

In the figure, the product length is shown by the red arrow.

Long trousers, skirts and floor-length dresses

The instructions for Burda patterns for trousers indicate the length of the product along the side seam, for the skirt - simply the length of the skirt.

As well as information about where the upper section of the skirt or trousers is located, as a rule, it lies on the waist.

For example, if you have a dress pattern in front of you, then the length of the product will be indicated from the waist.

When transferring patterns to tracing paper, always transfer the mark indicating the waist line.

Compare the product length indicated in the pattern and your measure "product length".

Calculate (in centimeters) the difference between them.

When removing the pattern on tracing paper, lower the bottom line of the product to this difference.

Low Waist Products

If the instructions for the Burda pattern indicate that the upper cut of the skirt or trousers is so many centimeters below the waist, then the length of the product in the instructions will be indicated minus this value. When calculating the increase in length, be sure to consider this important point.

Before extending the pattern by a specific number of centimeters, you must subtract the above value from your measurement "product length". And only after that determine the difference between the two values - the length of the product indicated in the magazine, and your measure "product length".

For the resulting difference between the lengths, lower the bottom line of the product when removing the pattern on the tracing paper.

In the event that only the length of the product is indicated in the instructions, or you doubt the correctness of its definition, always focus on the “waist line” label indicated on the pattern and on your measurement “product length”.

And only after that proceed to adjust the length.
