The style of Frida Kahlo, no less recognizable than her paintings, has become an endless source of inspiration for several generations.
@fridakahloo_How many world famous artists can you name right now without peeping anywhere? If you are not an expert in the field of art history and not an enthusiastic collector of painting, most likely the list will be extremely short. And yet, in the vast majority of cases, the first who comes to mind is Frida Kahlo.
A tribute to traditions: how to wear ethnic prints?
@fridakahloo_, @fridakahlo
Why exactly is she? After all, not everyone likes her work: complex, rich, surreal, not shy to demonstrate the suffering through which the artist had to go through life. The answer is on the surface: Frida Kahlo herself turned herself into an icon with her own hands, inventing and thinking up a unique style that remained true to every little thing. Contradictory, expressive, loud, straightforward, rebellious and unwilling to give up - she was like that against everything and everyone, even against herself.
This winter, in the Moscow Manege, an exhibition of the works of legendary artists Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera. This event is of rare scale, because never before in Russia more than 90 works of famous spouses have been demonstrated. The exhibition runs until February 25, 2019, well, today we’ll talk about such a cultural phenomenon as the personal style of Frida Kahlo!

Two accidents
Frida always said that there were two accidents in her life: the first happened to her at the age of 18, when the bus she was riding on collided with a tram. Frida received terrible injuries: a triple fracture of the spine, a fracture of the clavicle, broken ribs, a triple fracture of the pelvis, eleven fractures of the right leg, a fragmented and dislocated right foot, a dislocated shoulder. In addition, her stomach and uterus were pierced with metal railing, which led to infertility. She was bedridden for a year, and later she still had to undergo dozens of surgeries and withstand endlessly long months in hospital.
Frida with her husband, @fridakahloThe second accident in her life, Frida called her husband, Diego Rivera, a famous Mexican artist. Even before marriage, Frida was well aware of the love affairs of her chosen one, who was also 21 years older than her, but nevertheless extremely painfully experienced treason. Her own explosive temperament, passion and boyish impudence forced her to rush between love and hatred, loyalty and revelry (many lovers, including even Leon Trotsky, are credited to Frida!). They survived the divorce and re-wedding, having lived together for many years, until the excruciating diseases that gradually defeated Frida did not separate them.

Frida died of pneumonia on July 13, 1954, just a couple of days after her 47th birthday. On the eve of her death, Rivera sat at his wife’s bedside bed all night. Then she gave him a ring, bought on their 25th anniversary, although there were still several weeks left until the memorable date. "Why so early?" asked Diego. “Because I feel that I will leave you soon,” Frida answered. Rivera survived her lover for three years.
Frida Kahlo Style
Shot from the film "Frida" (2002). In the role of Frida - Salma HayekWhen we say "Frida" - it is always flowers in black hair, thick eyebrows fused on the bridge of the nose, lush long skirts and bright colors. The personal style of the great artist evolved gradually, influenced not only by her own contradictory nature, but also by circumstances. For example, Frida preferred long skirts to the floor literally from childhood, because due to polio transferred at the age of six, one of her legs became thinner and became noticeably shorter than her left, which led to lameness. Skirts, as well as wide trousers in the men's style, made it possible to mask the ailment.
Frida's outfits from museum collectionsBy the way, Frida loved the elements of a man’s wardrobe not only by necessity, but also by emotional inclination: the infamous artist was credited with novels not only with men, but also with women, besides, Frida was very fond of transforming into a man, dressing in costumes and even short getting a haircut.
Young Frida in the male image and "Self-portrait with cropped hair"After several years of living in the USA, Frida became even stronger in her love of folk style and Mexican customs. She highly valued handmade clothes and most often wore a Mexican peasant blouse in combination with silk, cotton or velvet floor skirts. One of the main sources of inspiration for her was the national costumes of the residents of the Isthmus of Teuantepec in Oaxaca and other states of Mexico. The artist paid special attention to accessories: Frida collected an impressive collection of pre-Columbian jewelry and often wore necklaces of this era, portraying herself in self-portraits. Large heavy bracelets, which looked rude and spectacular, used her unchanging love.
@fridakahloAnother distinctive and characteristic feature of her style is layering. Frida easily combined things and textures. For example, she often wore several skirts on top of one another, combining them with magnificent petticoats (on which, according to rumors, Mexican curses were embroidered with her own hand). Rich embroidery with ethnic motifs, shawls and stoles with luxurious fringe, spacious blouses allowed Frida to mask another problem - she was forced to wear a medical corset.
Frida's outfits from museum collectionsEvery day, Frida steadfastly endured pain, which no one has the right to judge, and every day she contrasted this pain with bright colors, flowers and ribbons woven into her hair, the cheerfulness of ethnic costumes, and the originality of her own appearance. When in 1953 she was forced to amputate her leg to the knee due to the onset of gangrene, she herself designed a prosthesis with a red boot, decorated with Chinese-style embroidery and bells - so that everyone would hear about her approach.
Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & GabbanaIt is not surprising that such a distinctive figure had a tremendous impact not only on culture in general, but also on fashion in particular. Time and again, designers from different countries turn to the personality cult of Frida Kahlo - Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alberta Ferretti and many, many others reconstructed and deconstructed Frida's style, exaggerating and raising to the absolute ethnic Mexican note in her images.
If you want to create an image in the style of Frida Kahlo, you should evaluate how you are ready to play with colors and textures. Since Frida’s imagination and courage knew no bounds, she was hardly stopped by the word “too,” which means that without a certain share of outrageousness and excessiveness, your image will simply not be recognizable.
The simplest choice will be the combination of a skirt in the floor and blouses in ethnic style or simple, but bright tops. The skirt can be decorated with embroidery or a sophisticated catchy print, tiered skirts will look especially good. Add a large necklace, shawl or cape, and also to complete the image, do not forget about the signature high hairstyle with flowers or ribbons woven into the hair.

Well, of course, if your wardrobe already has men's-style trousers, you can try to create a bright image by combining them with a bright top, and tops richly decorated with ethnic embroidery will work perfectly in this case. The main thing is not to forget about the business card of the image in the style of Frida: invariable flowers in the hair!
